Vegetarianism... sort of

So in case I have not said earlier I am a fan of the show The Biggest Loser. One of the trainers on there, Jillian Michaels, also has a radio show on KFI in which I have recently been downloading and listening to the podcasts of the show. In a few shows she has mentioned how she has pretty much turned into a vegetarian with the exception of fish an eggs. She quotes facts about how chickens and cows are being feed genetically engineered corn and about the abuse of animals we consume. Also, adding to these swarms of thoughts in my head was my sister’s friend’s husband (Ferris Bueller anyone?). He has chosen to not eat meat unless the animal “chose to die” or was specifically killed by that person for sustenance. He had other great arguments/beliefs that challenged my way of thinking or perceiving food. So after hearing his point of view on meat and after listening to Jillian Michael’s argument and doing a little bit of research on my own I have been giving some serious thought to making the change in my own diet. I used to hate fish but made my self eat it for its’ nutritional value and have actually now found some that I enjoy. I rarely eat red meat as it is and have had pork less than 5 times in my life. I really would be giving up chicken (apparently one of the most tainted foods out there) and the occasional bbq lamb that I would make with my dad twice a year. I love vegetables as it is and fruit really is God’s natural desert for us. So for me the change would not be completely drastic but the mindset would be the hurdle. Ignorance is bliss, but knowing is caring. I am curious to hear your thoughts on the matter. After knowing about the harmful affects of the foods in your diet or the inhuman ways our meat is being treated, would you make the change or is food just food?

Dear 24-Hour Fitness

Dear 24-Hour Fitness,

Why do you waste my time? I love that you offer spinning classes at 5:30am for those people who want to workout and shower before heading off to work. What I don’t like it getting up and getting to the gym by 5:10am to sign up for a spot in your lovely class only to have time and time again an already full sign-in sheet with more than a dozen of us disappointed, once again, to not get to participate in such said class. Might I suggest more classes, more rooms, or bigger rooms to accommodate other people? Thanks so much.

Mother's Day Picnic

Sometimes a low key at-home lunch can be just what is needed for Mother's Day. My grandmother and mother said this was one of the best Mother's Day just hanging out and spending time together. Probably didn't hurt that we made great food and had delicious wine to keep us company.

A Better Point of View

As a good friend and I say, “I am not a pessimist, I am a realist.” I have to say that 50% of that statement is correct. I am one of those people who can’t really be put in a box. If someone is overly optimistic I will point out the “realist” side but if someone is being a pessimist or “realist” I will counter balance with the positive. I like there to be a yin to the yang and vise versa. Although I hate it when people play the Devil’s Advocate I have to say that I like to add in a differing point of view.

Where is this all coming from? Well I have been spending a lot of time with a bunch of different friends and family lately (my introvert side is really glad I took the night off) and I have just been weighing people’s opinions and statements and retaining their responses and input. Politically, spiritually, and emotionally I like and need to hear different points of views to challenge my own and to make me stronger and more educated in what I believe in. I love these challenging conversations and wouldn’t trade them for the world, but when it comes to your day to day and your personality I find that it is really hard for me to be around negative people for a long period of time. I know you reading this are saying, “duh!” but I like to think that I have pretty high tolerance. I feel that I am at a pivotal crossroads in my life and I need people around me to encourage me and challenge me to move on the right direction for me and to help me be more secure in the person I have become and continuing to change into.

I am not saying that I want someone to always say I am doing the right thing and that my decisions and actions are perfect. I still need those friends who call you out when you have made a poor decision and to walk with me through correcting them. But what I do need is a person who has the spiritual compass and intellectual and emotional capacity to walk beside me and to offer those words of encouragement that are needed. I guess I am saying that perhaps it is time to expand my horizon and my safety zone and to step outside and meet new and promising people so that I too can become a better person to walk beside on this path we call life.
