New Healthy Recipes

So after getting home from Tahoe it became apparent to me that I would have to go grocery shopping ASAP as I could not merely live off of almond butter, brown rice, and tea, tempted as I might be. Around this epiphany I looked down at my pitiful stack of mail and saw my new Fitness Magazine waiting to be thumbed through. I skimmed the pages and came across a section of healthy meal ideas that they suggested you use for a month. The ideas consisted of 7 breakfasts, 13 snacks (suggested 2 a day), 7 lunches, and 7 dinners. Some of the recipes had meat so immediately they were out, but there were some veggie meals that actually sounded decent. So with pen and paper in hand I made up my grocery list for meals for the week.

Admittedly I am not going to be having the snacks they suggest as they are things like 100-calorie pack of kettle corn with peanuts or 3 mini glazed donuts, basically things I would not regularly eat and would not want to start eating. For snacks I opted for apples, almond butter, and bananas. I did, however, stick to the other new recipes verbatim and was seriously surprised how much I liked them. Did I mention one of the lunches uses veggie burgers as the main ingredient? Have I ever told you about my first experience with a veggie burger several years ago? Here is how the story goes.

Dad: I just bought these veggie burgers from Costco. I had one for lunch today. You have to try one.

Me: Veggie burgers? You? Why?

Dad: They looked good so I thought I would give it a try. (This must be where I get it from.)

Me: Ok. Wait, you already had one?

Dad: Oh yea, I had one for lunch. Just heat it up in the microwave. Try adding ketchup to it.

Me: Alright. (Heat it up, ketchup on side just in case. Take a bite. Continue to spit it out.)
That was awful!!! No amount of ketchup will help that piece of cardboard. You liked it?

Dad: No. I just wanted you to taste it too.

Me: To share in your misery?

Dad: (chuckling) Yes. I am not buying those again.

Oh dad! Luckily the veggie burger market has grown in taste and variety since this event. I opted for the Black Bean Chipotle variety which has intense great flavor. I might just start buying them to have in the house at all times. So glad I tried these new recipes! Yummy!

Mi dispiace

Translation = I am sorry. I have not posted in a while and that might have been due to celebrating the holidays with my family in Tahoe for the last week. Something to think about...

Not sure if you know this about me or not, but I love reading and talking about philosophical ideas. In fact, when I first went to college I went in thinking I was going to double major in psychology and philosophy but I am too practical and decided I actually wanted to have a job waiting for me when I graduated which is why I ultimately declared a business major. But I digress, I wanted to leave you with a quote that I read recently. It comes from the French philosopher Voltaire. I hope it invokes your sense of duty as it has mine.

On a side note, this quotation reminds me of a passage in the book of James. It is: "Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin." - James 4:17

SFG Update

I don't have any pictures this week as it has been raining and I just didn't feel like it. All crops are status quo with the exception of my butternut squash that did not survive the frost this week. So sad. A few mornings this week I had to scrape tons of ice off of my windshield in the morning so I guess I should have figured one of my plants wouldn't survive. I wonder if it is too late to plant a new one? I wonder how much it would cost to erect a green house in my backyard to avoid this in the future. That is all for now. I will post pictures next time.

Accidental Yummy Soup

So yesterday I took a break from studying to have lunch. I had just taken a practice exam of the chapters I have read so far and was not to pleased with my results so I opted to play the lecture on my computer in the background for review while I prepared lunch which is why I was slightly distracted and cannot account for the exact measures I am about to share. You see my options for lunch were my homemade chunky Italian minestrone which I had been eating all week so I kind of wanted something new. My wild mushroom and asparagus quiche, but I had forgotten to defrost a slice so that was out. Salad fresh from my garden which seemed not quite warm enough for this cold day. I noticed I had a few vegetables in the frig that needed to be used soon otherwise they would be a waste and so I opted for a throw together soup. And I thought, hey if it stinks at least I used my food and didn’t let it go to waste. Well leave it to boredom, necessity, absentmindedness, and being cold to make one of the tastiest soups! Here is what I know went in with approximate quantities in case you are feeling inspired and want to try it on your own.

8 cups of water
2 chicken-flavored bouillon cubes
1 cup uncooked whole wheat penne pasta
2 celery stalks, chopped
2 medium sized carrots, chopped
1/3 cup frozen corn
½ medium onion, sliced
1 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
¾ Tbsp herbs de Provence
salt to taste

As you can see from the list of ingredients I was really cleaning out the refrigerator and pantry.

Combine water, bouillon, penne, celery, carrots, and corn in large pot and bring to boil. In a separate sauté pan over add olive oil and onions and cook over medium heat until onions are translucent, about 3-4 minutes, then set aside. When water has been boiling for about 5 minutes add onions and boil an additional 8 minutes. Turn heat down to medium-low and stir in the herbs de Provence. Cook for an additional 3 minutes. Serve warm. Freeze or refrigerate any leftovers and reheat later.

Note: I added a little salt in the water at the beginning. People vary in the saltiness of their food, so just salt to your own taste. Enjoy!

Delicata Squash Anyone?

So...ever since eating that amazing salad from Boulettes Larder I haven't been able to get delicata squash out of my head. I finally gave in and stopped by my local grocery store to see if they sold them and guess what? They did! I bought two (they aren't too big). I am going to roast them and make my own salad with them with my home grown lettuce. Didn't grown any broccoli rabe...this season at least. Here are a few fun facts that I bet you didn't know about delicata squash:

1. The skin is edible! The thin skin can be cooked and eaten unlike most of the squash out there that need to be peeled.
2. This squash is described as having the flavor of sweet potatoes and corn.
3. It is available to eat all year round! But it is noted that it is best in December and January.
4. It is typically smaller that what you think of when you say "squash" as it runs between 5-10 inches long.
5. One cup of cooked squash is only 100 calories!
6. Not only contains vitamins A & B, but also vitamin C.
7. Last and most important, I am going to save and dry the seeds to plant some for my own garden!

Restaurant Review - The Slanted Door

So I debated about whether or not to put this review up. You see, I don't like writing negative reviews. Even on Yelp, I usually write about the places that I actually liked unless it was a horrible experience and I want to save others the same fate.

Well my experience at The Slanted Door wasn't horrible, but it wasn't great either. Let me sum up.

Location: Ferry Building, San Francisco, CA

Decor: Modern. Nothing spectacular but it did have a pretty hoppin' bar area but it seemed way too loud to hear what your company was saying. They have an outside patio (with heaters) that overlooked the bay and the bridge which was pretty cool.

Staff: For a restaurant with so much buzz I would have expected great service. Our service was less than mediocre. It took a really long time to order and get our food. One of the people I was with really did not like her food (the title of the dish was misleading) and wanted to send it back. Well the waiter didn't come till the end of the meal so she never got to eat because he didn't bother to check on us. He did end up comping her dish, which I think he should have anyway at that point. Not what I call great. Oh, I forgot to mention that the wine I ordered was half sediment when I tried to drink it. Also, the weight staff never asked and they had to have seen the glass.

Food: As mentioned above, one person truly disliked their dish as mentioned above so I won't go into details. As for the other two dishes ordered, one was baby spinach with garlic and caramelized shallots in which the garlic and shallots were MIA so in essence we paid $11 for steamed spinach which would cost us about $0.50 to make ourselves. I ordered the cellophane noodles with fresh dungeness crab meat which was just a plate of noodles that came to our table cold and had the occasion chunk of crab meat. $18 for noodles. Catching a theme? Dessert, on the other hand, was actually quite delicious and the only thing I deemed worthy of taking a picture of. It was a maze of hazelnut, chocolate, chocolate cream, and nuts in a type of doughnut sandwich fashion. Quite tasty and it ran about $8.

SFG Update

Several salads later, update is as follows:

6 heads of romaine lettuce - several salads made
6 heads of bibb (butter) lettuce - 2 salads made. I think these would be better as wraps than salads. Also, some sort of creature seems to be feasting on some leaves and I can't find the dastard. When I do, death to him!
1 butternut squash has sprouted. Need to germinate a new one...soon.
4 golden beets have sprouted, one looks to be struggling still.
5 cauliflower have sprouted and are going strong. The one I thought had not sprouted might have been planted with another so there is the possibility of 6 cauliflowers!
6 spinach are doing well but are slow going. And all four seedlings have sprouted! I am leaving them in the seedling container until the roots are more established.

Restaurant Review- Il Cane Rosso

Ok, ok so I only had breakfast there, but boy was it yummy. And the view of the bridge was not too shabby either. I has the slow scrambled eggs and my sister had the yogurt. I am partial to slow scrambled eggs, but they were done just right. We did order the coffee and the mini french press had malfunctioned so we didn't really get any. Next time. Great little place for breakfast before, during, or after the farmer's market.

I thought it was ironic that I saw this cute puppy right outside of the restaurant as we were leaving. He is just picture perfect.

San Francisco Ferry Building Farmer's Market

So a few years back my oldest sister really started getting my middle sister and I into shopping at farmer's markets. I must say I wasn't as consist about shopping there every week like she was until I stayed in Paris and the street where we stayed was an actual farmer's market daily (except for Mondays). It was pretty amazing and when I came back to the US and tried a store bought tomato I spit it out (literally) and decided that I needed to commit to change my ways. Ever since then everywhere I go I check out local farmer's markets thanks to my sister.

So every Tuesday and Thursday at the San Francisco Ferry Building they have an outdoors farmer's market in which about 15,000 people visit each day. That is pretty amazing to consider that many people care about good, local, fresh, and healthy food in just one place. Warning: always bring cash and be prepared to try samples to know what you are buying. Here are a few pictures I took, sorry there weren't more but I was too distracted talking with people and checking things out. Sensory overload!
